What Makes Us

The Best of All Worlds! Why Choose Just One Approach?

Since we are a small and independently owned daycare and preschool, we have had the freedom to create a progressive program that is constantly evolving. We use a blend of Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Waldorf approaches in our curriculum and design, as well as basing our curriculum around play and nature. We stay current with research on early childhood education and development and update our program accordingly. Many of our favorite articles and studies have come from the Scandinavian countries who tend to be at the top of the charts when it comes to early education and have highly influenced our program. Our teachers enjoy attending frequent trainings, conferences, and classes in which we are able to implement new ideas and practices right away.

Play and Nature Based

We believe in the importance of PLAY and the OUTDOORS! At both The Growing Tree and Treehouse, we strive to inspire a sense of wonder and playfulness and build a foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Children have a natural curiosity and interest in the world around them, they need a balance that allows them to reach their potential, without pushing them beyond their personal comfort limits.

Progressive Curriculum

We have a laid-back, go with the flow attitude when it comes to our daily schedule,  activities, and curriculum. Our teachers have the flexibility to change the schedule of the day and align it with what the kids want to do, making our program very child-directed. The teachers are the facilitators and children have control over their learning through a wide range of experiences and activities. We follow a general daily schedule, but depending on the flow of the day, weather, and the children's input, it is subject to change. Children will always have the choice to participate or choose a different activity. Our classrooms are designed so that children can have freedom to explore toys, materials, and activities when and how they want. They will never be forced to participate in an activity if they do not want to.

Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Waldorf Inspired

We use inquiry-based learning that promotes wonder and joy. Curiosity drives children's interest to understand their world and their place within it. We offer self-directed activities, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In our classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.

Small Ratios

Maintaining small child teacher ratios is very important. At The Growing Tree we have 1:4 teacher to child ratio and at The Treehouse we maintain a 1:6 ratio.

Process over Product Learning

Process is all about the experience of learning! The process of art, the process of play, the process of writing skills, and so on! We get messy, have fun, and encourage children to take ownership of their learning.

Mixed-Age Group Setting

With a mixed-age group, all children play together building responsibility in the older kids and providing the younger kids with role models.

Your Partners in Parenting

Building lasting relationships with children and their families is a goal of ours. Many of our children are with the same teachers from infancy through preschool! Even once they go to elementary school, we stay in touch with families and have an annual summer reunion! We are your “partners in parenting” and will work closely with you to individualize care for your child.

Teaching and Modeling Compassion

Kindness Matters! Children have an inborn capacity for compassion. Our goal is to help them understand why kindness matters and what it means to be compassionate. With our mixed-age group setting, children learn about respect, responsibility, and that we are all unique! We celebrate differences and foster children's ability to empathize.

Scandinavian and Finnish Influence

The Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark) lead the way for early education. They value equality for all and the importance of play, in result kids are less stressed.

We've also adopted the Danish word "Hygge", meaning Coziness and Contentment.  With our small, cozy, and home-like environment, we pride ourselves in serving as a “home away from home” for the children in our care!

Fresh and Mostly Organic Meals and Snacks

We serve fresh and mostly organic foods, always consisting of fruits and vegetables, a grain, and a protein. All of our meals and snacks are prepared by the teachers during mealtime, and whenever possible, the children are encouraged to help with preparation, baking, and cooking. We get frequent deliveries from Amazon Fresh and Imperfect Produce. Sugar is limited to special occasions and celebrations.

Home-like Enviornment

A home away from home! We use warm colors in our design, have drapes, cozy rugs, pillows and blankets. Pictures of the children and their art work fill the space. Meals and snacks are prepared by the teachers at the time of eating and served family style. Children are often with the same group of other kids for all 5 years and become as close as siblings!
